Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage is massage therapy specifically tailored for the expectant mother's needs. It uses a combination of Swedish and Remedial Massage techniques, to assist with the tensions and pains experienced during pregnancy. These are often caused by the extra weight and shift in the centre of gravity as the baby develops

Some of the benefits of massage during pregnancy include:

  • Stimulation of the circulation, helping to distribute essential nutrients and fluid to all vital organs including the placenta.
  • Lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce oedema.
  • Improving a sluggish bowel, and hence helping to avoid constipation and haemorrhoids.
  • Releasing muscular tension.
  • Helping the respiratory system and aiding breathing, especially during later stages of pregnancy.
  • Helping to avoid varicose veins.
  • Inducing deep relaxation, aiding peaceful sleep and helping to reduce emotional stress.
  • Helping to keep blood pressure balanced

Proper positioning and support using pillows and padding ensures comfort and safety for the mother and baby. Various techniques and adaptations are used as the client progresses through the pregnancy, and massage may be performed whilst she is lying on her side or seated.

Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy. Regular massage throughout the pregnancy is also said to shorten labour time and to hasten the return to optimal fitness after birth.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a therapeutic method of improving health by stimulating predefined pressure points on the feet and hands. This controlled pressure alleviates the source of the discomfort. In the absence of any particular illness or abnormality, reflexology may be as effective for promoting good health and for preventing illness as it may be for relieving symptoms of stress, injury, and illness.

Reflexologists work from maps of predefined pressure points that are located on the hands and feet. These pressure points are reputed to connect directly through the nervous system and affect the bodily organs and glands. The reflexologist manipulates the pressure points according to specific techniques of reflexology therapy. By means of this touching therapy, any part of the body that is the source of pain, illness, or potential debility can be strengthened through the application of pressure at the respective foot or hand location.

I offer various forms of Reflexology practice, including: Classic Foot and Hand Reflexology, Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT), Nerve Reflexology and Maternity Reflexology.
