Pain and Mobility

Common Types of Chronic pain

Pain is defined as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage” It includes any abnormal feeling from aching, burning, shooting, numbness, cramping etc.

Common Types of Chronic pain are associated with:

  • Shoulder and neck
  • Arms, wrists and elbows
  • Low back
  • Pelvis
  • Hips and Knees
  • Headaches
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Neuralgia
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Bowel conditions
  • Chronic and degenerative diseases
  • Muscles

Common to all of these conditions is inflammation (from the Latin inflammatio, to set on fire). Inflammation is a complex biological response by the body to injury or assault, as it attempts to remove the stimulus and initiate tissue healing.

It manifests as symptoms such as swelling, heat and redness with attendant pain as blood flow increases to the affected area and immune cells accumulate to eliminate the cause of injury and initiate the healing process. Although inflammation is a normal part of the healing process, when it becomes prolonged and if left untreated, it can cause numerous problems. Chronic inflammation can result when the body’s immune system is “tricked” into attacking its own soft tissue as though it was an invader, resulting in tissue destruction and the development of a number of chronic conditions.

Chronic pain can have a serious effect on both physical and mental wellbeing.

Foods which Influence Pain

Foods can influence our perception of pain by acting through a number of mechanisms. They can:

  • reduce damage at the site of an injury
  • cool an inflammatory response
  • provide analgesia on pain nerves
  • work within the brain to reduce sensitivity

The nature of your pain will affect the approach taken. For example:

  • Arthritis – the aim would be to prevent further joint damage as well as relieving pain
  • Shingles or neuropathic pain – the aim would be to fix a problem with the nerves
  • Cancer pain or chest pain – choose foods to affect the disease process
  • Chronic backache – the aim is to get rid of the pain.

There are four basic steps to consider when using food and drink to fight pain.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a therapeutic method of improving health by stimulating predefined pressure points on the feet and hands. This controlled pressure alleviates the source of the discomfort. In the absence of any particular illness or abnormality, reflexology may be as effective for promoting good health and for preventing illness as it may be for relieving symptoms of stress, injury, and illness.

Reflexologists work from maps of predefined pressure points that are located on the hands and feet. These pressure points are reputed to connect directly through the nervous system and affect the bodily organs and glands. The reflexologist manipulates the pressure points according to specific techniques of reflexology therapy. By means of this touching therapy, any part of the body that is the source of pain, illness, or potential debility can be strengthened through the application of pressure at the respective foot or hand location.

I offer various forms of Reflexology practice, including: Classic Foot and Hand Reflexology, Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT), Nerve Reflexology and Maternity Reflexology.
